Part One

The permanent reshaping of the hiring battlefield

In the era of remote work, the rules of the game have been rewritten. Not gradually. Not partially. Completely, and permanently. The candidate applying for a job no longer competes against a few dozen people in his city. He finds himself thrust into a global wrestling arena that includes thousands of contenders from every continent, every time zone, and every economic context.

The shift has happened so quickly, and with so little public discussion of its consequences, that most candidates have not yet recalibrated their strategies to match the new reality. The real danger does not lie in the sheer number of competitors. Numbers, after all, have always been a feature of competitive hiring at top companies. Sometimes the number is far higher. Pause for a moment to consider what those numbers actually mean. Twenty thousand candidates means twenty thousand cover letters, twenty thousand resumes, twenty thousand individual professional histories competing for a single offer. § 1.3The asymmetric pressure of salary competition

The financial pressure created by this geographic dissolution is its own underdiscussed story. A senior software engineer in San Francisco might expect a base salary of $180,000. The same role offered as remote-only attracts equally credentialed engineers from countries where $80,000 represents a generous salary. The hiring company is not legally or ethically required to pay equally; many of them now structure compensation by location, paying the candidate they ultimately hire something between the local market rate and the high-cost-region rate.

The candidate in the high-cost region therefore has to be better than the candidate in the lower-cost region by enough margin to justify the salary differential. Not equal. Better. § 2.2The tests were calibrated for human cognitive limits

Established researchers complained that students who used Google were not really learning; they were just looking things up.
