What Shell publicly says about its graduate stages, the seven-day deadline, the 10-month reapplication rule, and why test details are not confirmed.
Shell's graduate application has an online form, a first stage made of a Virtual Job Tryout plus an On-Demand Interview (about 40 minutes in total), and a final virtual case study session. Shell does not describe separate numerical or verbal reasoning tests on the pages we read, and it does not name a test provider.
Shell's graduate application page, in the version we read for this guide, is short on stages and long on how it feels. After the online form, which Shell says should take roughly five to ten minutes, there are two assessed stages.
Shell describes it as a set of simulations where you tackle challenges, show how you solve problems, tell your story and reveal how you work. It frames it as a way to see how you would fit the role.
Notice what is missing. The page does not use the words numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning or aptitude test, and it does not name a provider. Whether the simulations contain scored reasoning tasks is therefore not publicly confirmed. Some third-party guides describe cognitive questions inside the tryout; treat that as unverified.
A working-style element is also implied by Shell's wording, which mentions "reveal your work approach". ReasonEra does not cover that part.
Timing is where Shell is most concrete, and it is the part candidates most often get wrong.
Because of the short window, check your spam folder, and pick a quiet day before opening the link. Spreading it across several evenings is sensible, because you can save progress during the interview.
| Situation | What Shell says |
|---|---|
| You were unsuccessful | You may reapply to the programme after 10 months. Applications inside those 10 months are regretted. |
| You were successful earlier | Applications inside the next 10 months skip the Virtual Job Tryout and go straight to screening by the recruiting team. |
| You missed the seven-day window | The application is withdrawn automatically. You can reapply after 10 months. |
| You reached Final Assessment | Shell says it intends to schedule candidates within three weeks, though timing can vary. |
Since Shell stresses problem-solving and work approach, the safest preparation is broad. Practise reading short pieces of information carefully and deciding quickly. Make a habit of stating your reasoning aloud, because the interview stage rewards a clear explanation. For the final case study, learn to build a structure from supplied material: identify the question, pick out the key figures, state a recommendation and one risk.
If you enjoy puzzles, general numerical and logical practice is harmless and helps with data reading, but it is a guess about the content, not a prediction. Anything a candidate site claims about "the Shell test" should be weighed against Shell's own wording.
If something fails technically, contact the Shell careers team using the address on the invitation or the careers site rather than trying to restart repeatedly.
ReasonEra helps with the reasoning habits above. You upload a screenshot of a practice question, such as a table-based numerical item or a logic puzzle from a public test, pick Quick Verify or Tutor Explanation, and study the step-by-step reasoning. It is a learning aid for questions you choose to practise with, and it cannot tell you what Shell's simulations will contain. A free account includes 3 free trials, and a 14-Day Pass is 49 €.
Assessment stages vary by role, country and intake, so double-check the specifics before you plan around them.
We built ReasonEra to help you understand how reasoning questions work, but some assessments are proctored and many forbid any assistance, so treat it as practice and not as a way around the test.
It is the first assessed stage of Shell's graduate application, made up of simulations in which you solve challenges and show how you work. Shell follows it with an On-Demand Interview, and the two take about 40 minutes in total.
Shell gives you seven days from receiving the email invitation. If you miss it, the application is withdrawn automatically.
Not publicly confirmed. Shell's application page describes simulations and a recorded interview, and does not name numerical or verbal reasoning tests.
Shell says you may reapply to the programme after 10 months. Applications made inside that period are regretted.
Shell says applicants complete a virtual case study session with two Shell employees, with the information provided in advance. Graduate Programme applicants also have a virtual interview with the same two people.
Sign up, upload up to three questions, and see whether the explanations help you. A 14-Day Pass is available when you need more.
