Aon verbal reasoning test: what to expect and how to practise

Reading fast is not enough. Aon's verbal test asks whether a statement is supported by a passage, and the third option is where most mistakes happen.

The short answer

Aon lists its Verbal Reasoning test as 12 minutes with 49 tasks, where you judge statements against written information. Each statement has three answer options, TRUE, FALSE and CANNOT SAY, and only the information on the relevant sheet counts. Aon says you are not expected to answer all tasks.

How the test works

According to Aon's practice document, you see several sheets of information in text form and a series of statements. The sheets do not change during the test. Each statement belongs to one sheet, and you must locate it, read the relevant part, and decide.

The aim is to see whether you can analyse written information and judge how truthful a statement is based only on what the sheet says. It is not a vocabulary test, and outside knowledge should play no part. Aon recommends working through tasks in the predefined order, though you can navigate between statements.

Three answers, three different jobs

AnswerUse it whenTypical trap
TRUEThe sheet says it, or says something that means the same thing in other wordsWaiting for identical wording; paraphrases count
FALSEThe sheet says something that directly conflicts with the statementA statement that is half right and half wrong is still FALSE
CANNOT SAYThe sheet is silent, or gives only a hint of a linkFilling the gap with common sense or a plausible cause

Aon's own rationales illustrate each pattern: a paraphrase that is TRUE, a statement that mixes a correct part with an incorrect part and is therefore FALSE, and statements that attribute a cause or a result the passage never links, which are CANNOT SAY.

Original worked example

The passage below is invented for this guide and is not from Aon.

Northgate Library opened in 1998 in a converted grain store. Since 2015, members can borrow up to eight items at once; before that, the limit was five. Late-return fines were abolished for children's books in 2019, while adult fines remain. The library runs a weekly reading group for adults and a monthly storytelling morning, which was introduced after the building's extension. Volunteers have staffed the reading group since it began.
Statement A: Members could borrow fewer items before 2015 than they can now.
  • TRUE
  • FALSE
  • CANNOT SAY
Answer: TRUE
The limit was five before 2015 and is eight now, so earlier borrowing capacity was smaller.
Statement B: Late-return fines no longer apply to any items.
  • TRUE
  • FALSE
  • CANNOT SAY
Answer: FALSE
Fines were abolished for children's books only. The passage states adult fines remain, which contradicts "any items".
Statement C: The extension made the storytelling morning more popular.
  • TRUE
  • FALSE
  • CANNOT SAY
Answer: CANNOT SAY
The passage says the morning was introduced after the extension. It says nothing about popularity or any cause. After is not because.
Statement D: Volunteers staff the monthly storytelling morning.
  • TRUE
  • FALSE
  • CANNOT SAY
Answer: CANNOT SAY
Volunteers are mentioned only for the reading group. The sheet does not tell us who staffs the other event.

Habits that make the passage easier

Pacing: 49 tasks in 12 minutes

If you tried every task, 12 minutes over 49 tasks leaves about 15 seconds each. Aon states that candidates are not expected to answer everything, so treat that figure as an upper bound on speed and prioritise accuracy.

Because the sheets stay constant, you become familiar with them as the test goes on. Aon notes this directly. That means the first few statements will feel slow, then you will start to know which sheet answers which topic. Do not fight that curve by rushing the opening items.

Aon also says incorrect answers generally cost points on performance tests. For a statement you cannot settle after a reasonable look, make a considered call and move on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Aon verbal reasoning test?

Aon lists 12 minutes and 49 tasks. It also says you are not expected to answer all of them, so accuracy matters more than finishing.

What is CANNOT SAY in the Aon verbal test?

CANNOT SAY is the correct answer when the sheet does not give enough information to decide, even if the statement sounds likely. Aon's own rationale includes cases where a cause or an agent is simply not stated.

Can I use outside knowledge in Aon verbal reasoning?

No. You judge each statement only against the information on the relevant sheet. Real-world knowledge is a common source of wrong answers.

Do I need to look at several sheets for one statement?

No. Aon says each statement relates to only one data sheet, so you need to find that sheet and use it alone.

Is there an official verbal practice test from Aon?

Yes. Aon publishes a practice PDF with five verbal reasoning questions and written rationales, and the real assessment begins with untimed examples.
