HireVue Assessment Guide

What HireVue publicly says about its structured video questions and game-based assessments, and how to prepare for the reasoning side with free practice.

The short answer

HireVue is a hiring platform, so what you meet depends on the employer: recorded questions, short games, or both. HireVue says video assessments usually have 5 to 8 questions and games run under 20 minutes each. It also says there is no way to study for the video part beyond ordinary interview preparation.

Start with what HireVue actually is

HireVue is a platform. The employer decides which parts to switch on, in which order, and how the results are used. That is why two people who both say they "did a HireVue" can describe very different experiences: one recorded answers to questions on camera, another played a set of short games, a third did both. Employers and publishers change their processes, and what you receive can vary by role, country and year, so treat your own invitation as the final word.

This page is limited to the parts that involve reasoning and judgement: the structured, recorded question format and the game-based assessments, as HireVue describes them publicly. It does not give advice on how automated scoring works or how to influence it. HireVue itself says the interview and any assessment are a first screen, and that hiring decisions are made by people in later conversations.

Stage one: the recorded question format

According to HireVue's candidate FAQ, a video-based assessment can contain three kinds of question: situational judgement, scenario-based simulations, and past-behaviour questions. A simulation asks you to act out your response rather than describe it. HireVue says most of these take under 20 to 30 minutes, suggests you set aside 45, and says most contain between five and eight questions with several minutes to answer each.

You record in a browser on a computer, or in the HireVue app on a phone. If your connection drops, HireVue says you can resume through the same link. Some HireVue interview set-ups include practice questions, which HireVue says employers do not see. Whether yours has one depends on the employer.

The scenario-style questions are where the reasoning skill lies: read the situation, weigh the options, and explain a choice clearly. The free situational judgement practice test trains that habit with written scenarios.

Stage two: the game-based part

HireVue describes game-based assessments as a series of short games, each under 20 minutes according to its product page, that can be used for pre-hire screening or internal mobility. Its candidate guidance says a single game takes about 3 minutes, that whole assessments run from roughly 7 to 20 minutes, and that you should set aside around 30 minutes to be safe. The number of games is not publicly confirmed; HireVue says its team picks the mix for each assessment.

HireVue names three competency areas. Two of them are questionnaire-style measures of work style and collaboration, and ReasonEra does not cover those parts. The "working with information" area is the one that overlaps with reasoning practice: problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making.

HireVue also says the games are randomised, that you may move up or down in levels depending on how you do, and that early levels are easier so you can learn the format. Progress is saved if your connection drops.

What the cognitive-style games look like

HireVue's own blog gives two examples of cognitive tasks: memorising letters and numbers, and spotting patterns in images. It also names fluid intelligence, working memory and problem-solving as skills such games can measure. The exact games and rules differ by assessment, so the example below is only an analogy for the pattern-spotting idea, not a HireVue item.

Illustrative pattern task (original): a counter shows the values 4, 7, 13, 25, 49 in turn. What value comes next?
  • 73
  • 85
  • 97
  • 101
Answer: 97
Look at the gaps: 7 - 4 = 3, 13 - 7 = 6, 25 - 13 = 12, 49 - 25 = 24. Each gap is double the previous one, so the next gap is 48 and the next value is 49 + 48 = 97.

A working-memory task would look different: you would hold a short string of characters in mind and reproduce it. The skill that transfers across both is staying calm while the rules are still new, which is why a quick read of the instructions before each game matters.

What HireVue says about preparing

HireVue is direct on this point. For video-based assessments it says that beyond ordinary interview preparation there is no way to study, and it states that it does not work with or endorse third parties selling preparation or training. Its practical advice is plain: choose a quiet, well-lit space, keep your device charged, take the assessment when you are most alert, read each game's instructions, and take a short break between games.

That candid position is worth respecting. Nothing on this page claims any practice resource reproduces HireVue's own games. What general practice can do is build familiarity with the underlying thinking: spotting sequences, holding information in mind, and reasoning through a scenario.

ReasonEra is a browser-based AI tutor for practice. Upload a screenshot of a practice question, choose Quick Verify for the answer or Tutor Explanation for step-by-step reasoning, and learn why a pattern or judgement works. It is relevant here for pattern and abstract questions, situational judgement items and game-based style puzzles from public sample material. ReasonEra is not affiliated with HireVue and does not reproduce HireVue games.

Good starting points are the game-based assessment guide, the inductive reasoning guide and the situational judgement guide. A free account includes 3 free trials, and a 14-Day Pass costs 49 € for unlimited use for 14 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a HireVue assessment?

HireVue says most video assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes and suggests setting aside 45. For game-based assessments it suggests about 30 minutes, since some last 7 minutes and others 15 to 20.

How many questions are in a HireVue video assessment?

HireVue states that most video assessments include between five and eight questions, with several minutes to answer each. The exact number depends on the employer.

Are HireVue games cognitive tests?

Some are. HireVue lists cognitive tasks such as memorising letters and numbers or spotting patterns, alongside questionnaire-style areas. Which games you get is not publicly confirmed in advance.

Can you prepare for HireVue?

HireVue says that beyond normal interview preparation there is no way to study for its video assessment, and it does not endorse third-party training. Reading the instructions, resting and using a quiet space are the preparation it recommends.

Can I retake a HireVue assessment?

HireVue does not state a retake rule on its candidate pages. Retakes are decided by the employer, so ask them if something goes wrong.
